What Does Rehabilitation Do?

The etiology of patients in need of rehabilitation is very complicated, but there is a common feature: they have some function and ability lost. What we can do is to take all measures to reduce the consequences of disability, improve the function of the certain area, so that patients can live independently and return to society as soon as possible. In short, rehabilitation is to restore the “functions” of the patient’s body to a healthy state.

Rehabilitation can be applied to patients who can’t walk because of paraplegia, can’t take care of themselves because of a coma, can’t move and speak because of a stroke, can’t move their necks freely because of stiff neck, or suffer from cervical pain.

What Are Modern Rehabilitation Dealing With?

01 Neurological injury including hemiplegia after stroke or brain injury, traumatic paraplegia, cerebral palsy in children, facial paralysis, motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, dysfunction caused by nerve injury, etc;

02 Muscle and bone diseases including postoperative fracture, limb dysfunction after joint replacement, dysfunction after hand injury and limb replantation, osteoarthritis, dysfunction caused by osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, etc;

03 Pain including acute and chronic soft tissue injury, myofascitis, muscle, tendon, ligament injury, cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, scapulohumeral periarthritis, tennis elbow, low back and leg pain, and spinal cord injury.

In addition, the rehabilitation of other diseases such as coronary heart disease, some psychological diseases (such as autism), and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are also on progress. Rehabilitation is to restore the lost or decreased functions of human body.

Nowadays, rehabilitation is applicable to cervical spondylosis, lumbar disc herniation, pelvic inflammatory disease, postpartum urinary incontinence, tumor surgery, and complications of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Although most patients in rehab department are not in danger, they have to face the potential threat of traumatic sequelae, as well as the inconvenience due to function lost and limited movement.

Rehabilitation Center

If you enter a rehab center for the first time, you may feel that it’s a large “Gym”. According to the recovery of different functions, rehabilitation can be divided into several aspects: physical therapy, occupational therapy, language and psychological therapy, and TCM, etc.

At present, there are many rehab methods like sports therapy which helps patients restore their lost or weakened motor function. In addition, kinesiotherapy can prevent and improve muscle atrophy and joint stiffness.

In addition to sports therapy, there are physiotherapy, which can eliminate inflammation and relieve pain by using physical factors such as sound, light, electricity, magnetic, and heat, etc. Meanwhile, there is occupational therapy that can improve patients’ ADL and skills, so that patients can do better in social reintegration.
